If you’re looking for things to do in Heysham, Lancashire, this small coastal village makes an easy day out or relaxed campervan stopover. With an old village, coastal walks, views across Morecambe Bay and dog-friendly places to stop for food and drink, there’s plenty here for a few hours without needing a packed itinerary.
We visited Heysham for the day, parking at Heysham Village Car Park before exploring the old village and St Peter’s Church and then following an easy coastal walk of around 3.4 miles.
Although we didn’t stay overnight, campervans can also stop at The Royal at Heysham when eating and drinking at the pub, making it a useful option if you’re looking for a simple Lancashire campervan stopover.
Here’s our route, where we parked, what we found along the way and the practical information you might need before visiting Heysham.
Walk from St Peter’s Church.
The church sits close to the coast and is definitely worth a look. Even if you’re not particularly interested in churches, the location is lovely and it’s a nice place to stop before continuing towards the promenade and coastal path.
We then followed a linear walk along the coast.
The route was around 3.4 miles in total and was easy to adapt because you can simply turn around whenever you’ve walked far enough.
Most of it was an easy, relaxed walk, although there is a short hill coming back up from the promenade into the village.
Along the route we passed fields with horses, which added to the countryside feel despite being so close to the coast.
There is also a children’s play area, so Heysham would work well for families wanting somewhere to combine a short walk with a simple day out.
The views across Morecambe Bay are lovely, and because the walk isn’t particularly long it leaves plenty of time to explore the village or stop for a coffee afterwards.
We found the cafés and pub we visited to be dog friendly, which made it really easy travelling with the dogs.

Campervan overnight at The Royal
Although we only visited for the day, there is also the option of staying overnight in your campervan at The Royal at Heysham.
Campervans can stay in the pub car park if eating and drinking there.
That makes Heysham a really handy little stopover. You could spend the afternoon exploring the village and coast, have something to eat and a drink at the pub, then stay overnight without needing to drive anywhere else.
I would always contact The Royal before travelling to check that campervan stopovers are still available and whether you need to arrange it beforehand.
Is Heysham worth visiting?
I think Heysham is definitely worth adding to your list if you like quieter days out.
You don’t need a huge itinerary here.
We wandered through the village, visited St Peter’s Church, followed the coast, saw the horses along the route and stopped for a coffee.
It’s simple, inexpensive and easy to do in a day.
And with the option of a pub stopover, it could just as easily become a relaxed one-night campervan escape.
