If you’re looking for an easy campervan escape in Lancashire, Bolton-le-Sands and Carnforth should definitely be on your list.

We’ve visited this area several times, and it’s one of those places we always find ourselves returning to. It isn’t packed with famous attractions or busy tourist hotspots, but that’s exactly why we love it. It’s somewhere you can slow down, enjoy good food, wander along the Lancaster Canal, admire the views across Morecambe Bay and simply switch off for a couple of days.

Everything is within a few minutes of each other, making it an ideal destination for a relaxing 48-hour break.

Where to Stay

One of our favourite places to stay is Red Bank Farm. Sitting on the edge of Morecambe Bay, it offers beautiful views across the water towards the Lake District. There’s something special about waking up, opening the campervan door and seeing the bay stretching out in front of you. Having Archers Café on site is another bonus, especially if you fancy treating yourself to breakfast before heading out for the day.

If you prefer a quieter stop and you’re a Caravan and Motorhome Club member, Freshfields Caravan & Motorhome Club Certificated Location is another excellent choice. It’s peaceful, well maintained and perfectly positioned for exploring both Bolton-le-Sands and Carnforth.

Sandside Caravan Park and Bay View Holiday Park are also excellent bases, offering easy access to the canal, coast and nearby attractions.

If you prefer a site with more facilities, Bay View Holiday Park is a great choice. Overlooking Morecambe Bay, it offers spacious pitches, electric hook-up options and modern amenities, making it ideal for both weekend breaks and longer stays. The park has direct access to the coast, and on a clear day you’ll be treated to stunning views across the bay towards the Lake District.

Friday Evening

After arriving and getting settled, we usually head straight for the Lancaster Canal. The towpath is flat, peaceful and the perfect place to stretch your legs after the drive. Whether you’re walking the dog, cycling or simply watching the narrowboats glide by, it’s a lovely way to ease into the weekend.

When it’s time for dinner, we usually choose between The Royal Hotel and The Canal Turn. The Royal sits alongside the canal in Bolton-le-Sands and serves excellent food in a relaxed setting, while The Canal Turn in Carnforth is another favourite, particularly if you enjoy watching the boats pass while you eat ( also take campervans overnight-small carpark).

Saturday

Saturday starts slowly. After breakfast we’ll either head back to the canal for a longer walk or take the bikes out and explore further along the towpath. It’s one of those places where you don’t really need a destination; the journey itself is what makes it enjoyable.

Later in the morning we usually wander around Carnforth. The railway station is famous for its connection to Brief Encounter, but the town itself has plenty of independent shops and cafés that make it well worth a visit.

If the weather is kind, Hest Bank is only a short drive away and is somewhere we always recommend. Looking out across Morecambe Bay towards the Lake District is one of our favourite views in Lancashire, particularly when the tide is out and the landscape changes completely.

By the evening we’re usually ready for another good meal. If we’re in the mood for Indian food, Far Pavilion never disappoints. If it’s Chinese we’re after, Trungs has become our go-to restaurant whenever we’re staying in the area.

Sunday Morning

One of the things we enjoy most about campervan weekends is not having to rush. Sunday mornings are usually spent with a coffee outside the van before taking one final stroll along the canal or the coast. It’s a peaceful way to finish the weekend before packing up and heading home.

Why We Keep Coming Back

What makes Bolton-le-Sands and Carnforth special isn’t one single attraction. It’s the combination of peaceful canal walks, beautiful coastal scenery, welcoming places to eat and campsites that make it easy to relax.

It’s the sort of destination where you can leave the campervan parked up for the weekend, explore at your own pace and return home feeling like you’ve had a proper break without travelling hundreds of miles.
