We recently spent two nights just outside Holmfirth in our campervan, and I have to say, Holmfirth was much prettier than I expected.

We had booked the weekend because we were going to see One Night in Nashville at the Picturedrome, but it turned into a lovely little weekend away with good weather, a reservoir walk and time to explore Holmfirth itself.

Holmfirth really surprised me. It was busy and lively in the sunshine, with lots of independent places to eat and drink, while the surrounding Holme Valley countryside gives you plenty of options for walking and exploring.

An Evening at the Picturedrome

On our first evening we headed into Holmfirth to watch One Night in Nashville at the Picturedrome which was fantastic, great music and atmosphere.

The Picturedrome is right in the centre of Holmfirth, so it was a great excuse to have a wander around before the show. Holmfirth has much more going on than I expected, with lots of independent shops, cafés and pubs.

Coffee by the River

The following day the sun was shining, so we stopped for a coffee outside The Old Bridge one of the pubs overlooking the river.

It was really busy with people sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. The food menu looked lovely too, and the pub was also a hotel, which could be another option if you’re visiting Holmfirth without a campervan.

One of my favourite little finds was down a small alleyway leading towards the back of the river. We found a lovely area with bars and outdoor seating tucked away from the main street.

It had a completely different feel and looked like the sort of place that would be beautiful in the evening when everything was lit up. It felt much more upmarket than I had expected from Holmfirth.

Walking Around Holmfirth

Holmfirth itself isn’t huge, which makes it easy to explore on foot. There are plenty of places to stop for coffee, food or a drink, and then you have all the surrounding Holme Valley countryside to explore.

We only had two nights here and quickly realised there was much more we could have done.

Digley Reservoir

While we were staying in the area, we drove out to Digley Reservoir for a short circular walk.

We did the approximately 1.5-mile reservoir route, which gave us some lovely views without committing to one of the longer walks in the area.

Where We Stayed

We stayed just outside Holmfirth at Holme Valley Camping & Caravan Park for two nights. It made a great base for exploring Holmfirth and getting out to some of the surrounding walks.

Would I Go Back?

Definitely. We only touched on what there is to do around Holmfirth and the Holme Valley.

I’d like to go back for some of the walks we didn’t manage this time, particularly the riverside walk, four-pub walk and a Last of the Summer Wine walk.

Holmfirth surprised me. I went expecting a small Yorkshire town and a night at the Picturedrome, but found a really pretty place with independent shops, cafés, pubs, hidden riverside bars and some beautiful countryside right on the doorstep.

It made a great two-night campervan break — and somewhere we’ll definitely return to.
