Van Miles

North Wales has become one of my favourite places to explore in the campervan. The best thing about this route is that none of the drives are particularly long, so you can spend more time enjoying each stop rather than sitting behind the wheel.

This was the route I followed, taking in seaside views, mountain lakes, forests and one of the prettiest villages in Wales. Whether you’re planning a long weekend or a week away, it’s an itinerary I’d happily do again.

Stop 1 – Llandudno

I started my trip in Llandudno, a traditional Victorian seaside town that’s perfect for easing into your North Wales adventure.

I spent time walking along the promenade, taking in the sea views and looking up towards the Great Orme. There are plenty of cafés, independent shops and places to sit and simply watch the world go by.

It’s an easy place to explore on foot and a great first stop before heading inland towards the mountains.

Stop 2 – Betws-y-Coed & Llyn Elsi

Next was Betws-y-Coed, one of my favourite villages in North Wales.

Instead of staying in the village, I tackled the walk up to Llyn Elsi. It’s definitely a steep climb in places, but the views at the top make every step worthwhile.

The lake is peaceful, surrounded by forest and feels a world away from the busy village below. After the walk, I wandered through Betws-y-Coed, browsed the outdoor shops and rewarded myself with a coffee.

If you don’t mind a bit of a climb, I’d highly recommend adding Llyn Elsi to your itinerary.

Stop 3 – Porthmadog

Porthmadog was my next stop and makes a great place to spend a few hours.

The harbour is lovely to wander around and there are plenty of places to stop for food or a drink while watching the boats. It’s also home to the famous Ffestiniog Railway if you’re interested in heritage steam trains.

From here you’re perfectly placed to explore nearby beaches or continue further along the North Wales coast.

Stop 4 – Coed y Brenin Forest Park

Coed y Brenin was one of the biggest surprises of the trip and somewhere I’d definitely return to.

There are miles of walking and cycling trails through beautiful woodland, with rivers, waterfalls and wooden bridges along the way.

The visitor centre has a café and facilities, making it easy to spend half a day or even longer here. Whether you want a gentle woodland walk or something more challenging, there’s plenty to choose from.

Stop 5 – Llanberis

I finished my trip in Llanberis, sitting beside the beautiful Llyn Padarn.

I really enjoyed walking around the lake before visiting the National Slate Museum, which is free to enter and well worth a look. Llanberis is also where you’ll find the Snowdon Mountain Railway if you’d like to experience Yr Wyddfa without tackling the climb.

Even if you don’t head up the mountain, the scenery around Llanberis is simply stunning and makes a brilliant final stop.

📍 Llandudno → Betws-y-Coed → Porthmadog → Coed y Brenin Forest Park → Llanberis

Distance: Around 100 miles (160 km)

Final Thoughts

I loved this route because every stop felt completely different. One minute you’re walking along a Victorian promenade, the next you’re climbing to a peaceful mountain lake or wandering through ancient woodland.

The short driving distances make it perfect for campervan travel, allowing plenty of time to stop for photos, enjoy the scenery and explore without feeling rushed.
