If you’re looking for one of the Lake District’s most spectacular hidden gems, the Buttermere Infinity Pools should definitely be on your list. Tucked away above Buttermere with breathtaking views across the valley, these crystal-clear pools have become a favourite spot for walkers, photographers and wild swimmers alike.

Despite their popularity on social media, reaching them is surprisingly straightforward and rewards you with stunning scenery from the moment you leave the car park.

What are the Infinity Pools called?

The pools don’t have an official name, but they are commonly known as the Buttermere Infinity Pools. They sit alongside Warnscale Beck, below Warnscale Bothy, and are sometimes referred to as the Warnscale Beck Infinity Pools.

Where to park

The easiest place to park is at Gatesgarth Farm Car Park, located at the southern end of Buttermere, close to Honister Pass. The postcode for sat nav is CA13 9XA. Parking charges apply and the car park can fill quickly during weekends and school holidays, so arriving early is recommended.

How to find the Infinity Pools

From Gatesgarth Farm Car Park:

1. Leave the car park and turn left onto the road towards Honister Pass.
2. After approximately 150 metres, look for a sign pointing towards Honister House and take the gravel path on your right.
3. Follow this obvious track as it gradually climbs alongside the valley.
4. Continue for around 1.3 km, enjoying fantastic views back over Buttermere.
5. When you reach a small wooden bridge crossing the beck, cross it and follow the steeper grassy and rocky path uphill.
6. After roughly another 100 metres you’ll arrive at the famous infinity pool.

How long does it take?

From Gatesgarth Farm Car Park, most walkers reach the pools in around 25 to 35 minutes at an easy pace. The route is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) each way. The first section is gentle, with the final approach becoming steeper and rocky.

Is the walk difficult?

I’d describe this walk as easy to moderate. The majority of the route follows a good gravel path, making it suitable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness. The final section near the pools can be uneven, slippery and boggy after rain, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
