Van Miles

Burnsall is one of those places that instantly makes you slow down. We first visited around three years ago and always said we would return one day. With a free weekend and the campervan packed, it felt like the perfect time to head back to the Yorkshire Dales with the dogs.

We use search for sites when locating campsites. The Burnsall camping (Fell Grange farm) is a perfect spot at 20 pound per night with no Electric hook up. There is a large grass area to the back of the farm with beautiful scenery all around, making it feel peaceful straight away.

The facilities are basic but perfectly fine for a weekend away with choice of EHU, one toilet, washing up area and water tap but no showers.

Breaking up the journey at Wycoller

We set off from Blackpool and decided to make a stop at Wycoller Country park on the way for a walk and some lunch. There is cheap parking nearby before walking into the village itself.

The weather wasn’t the best so we chose a shorter walk through the village instead of anything too long. Even in the rain it still had a lovely atmosphere, we stopped for lunch on one of the picnic tables before continuing the journey.

Travelling with the dogs means we always like to break up the journeys, and Wycoller was a good stop for stretching everyones legs.

Arriving in torrential rain

We arrived at the campsite at 3pm and were immediatly welcomed by torrential rain.

Owning a smaller van means we rely on putting up a drive away awning for extra space, so there wasnt much we could do nut sit ad wait for the rain to ease off before setting up.

Thankfully the dogs had already been walked earlier in the day, so they were more than happy to settle down i the van while we waited it out .

Moments like this are all part of the campervan life, especially in the uk.

Evening walk into Burnsall

Once the rain had finally stopped and we had finished setting everything up, we walked the five minuets into Burnsall village.

We stopped at the Red lion pub for a drink and pudding and a warm before heading back to the van. The pub is very dog friendly – was sat in the snug ad the bar staff light the fire despite only being the two of us sitting in this area. The village has such a relaxed feel to it. Although i had previously visited i forgot how beautiful it was.

Simple breakfasts in the van

Breakfasts in the van are usually kept simple for us. A hot cross bun and a coffee while slowly getting ready for the day always seems to taste better when your away somewhere peaceful.

With the Yorkshire weather looking unpredictable again, we packed the waterproofs before heading out for the day.

Walking to Linton falls

One of the highlights was the walk to Linton falls an back. On our last visit we walked to Grassington which is well worth a visit but with our 15 year old dog Linton falls was far enough in a day. The walk itself was fairly flat and ideal for our older dog, which now dictates the routes we choose. There was only one small section with narrow steps where we had to help her through, but apart from that is was a manageable walk.

The scenery along the river praticularly the first section was stunning.

We stopped for a picnic by the river during the walk, although one thing we did notice was the lack of benches along the route. It would of bee nice to have somewhere to sit and eat whilst enjoying the views.

One last pub stop before home

On the way home we stopped once more at the Red Lion pub for tea. The outdoor seating area was lovely , with fantastic views across the countryside.

After packing everything away the next morning we set off and parked at The Bull pub to do another walk near Broughton Hall. the walk was finished off with a latte at the pub which was just perfect as the sun had come out

We like to keep track of what weekends away actually cost us, as campervan trips can still be done fairly reasonably.

A 2 night stay in a hotel in Burnsall was £275 therefore the van worked out good value for the weekend.

Despite the rain , Burnsall reminded us exactly why we enjoy slower campervan weekends so much, peaceful walks, riverside views, cosy pub stops and time outdoors with the dogs made it the perfect short escape.

It may not have been a weekend full of sunshine, but sometimes thsoe slower, quieter trips end up being the most memorable.
